We work alongside state associations, schools, universities, and multicultural communities to ensure every Australian has access to this fast-paced, non-contact team sport.

Governance & Leadership

Executive Committee

The Throwball Australia Federation is governed by a volunteer Executive Committee committed to growing the sport with integrity, transparency and purpose.

Office Bearers

President

Provides strategic leadership and national direction for Throwball Australia. Chairs Executive Committee meetings and upholds the organisation's constitution.

Vice President

Deputises for the President as required, supports executive decision-making, and represents Throwball Australia at state and national sporting forums.

Secretary & Operations

Maintains official records, coordinates communications, manages member correspondence, and oversees day-to-day administrative and operational functions.

Joint Secretary

Assists the Secretary in maintaining official records, member communications, and administrative operations to support the smooth running of the federation.

Treasurer

Responsible for financial governance, budget planning, accurate record-keeping, and financial reports in accordance with the federation's constitution and regulatory requirements.

Basic Play Rules

  • Service or court choice decided by a coin toss before the match
  • Players position themselves in their respective sides in a 2-3-2 formation
  • Match starts on referee's whistle; teams maintain position and rotate in Z order
  • Ball must be received with both hands and returned with one hand
  • Player must maintain contact with the ground when receiving the ball
  • Only one step allowed to return the ball
  • Players must avoid touching the dead box/no-entry zone during play
  • Match played best of 3 sets, each set of 15 or 25 points
  • Team winning 2 out of 3 sets wins the match
  • At 14/24 points each, play continues until a two-point lead is achieved (e.g., 16/26 or 17/27)
  • If tied at 16/26, first to score 17/27 wins
  • No position changes allowed after court change during deciding set at 8th or 13th point
  • Any natural or unforeseen disturbance results in a common ball and a re-service to the same server

Service Rules

  • Serve the ball using the palm of one hand from above shoulder level
  • Serve within 5 seconds after the referee's whistle, from inside the service area without touching the end line
  • Service ball touching the net or antenna results in a point to the opponent
  • Only one player on the receiving team may return the serve; a second touch by another player is not allowed
  • Players must be in correct positions during service:
    • • If a receiving player is out of position, serving team earns a point
    • • If a serving player is out of position, the serving team loses the service
    • • If both teams have players out of position, a common ball and re-service is called

Squad & Substitutions

  • Squad size: maximum 12 players (7 active, 5 substitutes)
  • No substitutions allowed at the 7th or service position
  • Maximum of 5 substitutions permitted per set
  • Multiple players can be substituted simultaneously
  • Referee's approval required to substitute

Time Outs

  • Each team has 2 time outs per set
  • Each time out lasts 30 seconds
  • Only manager, coach or captain can call a time out
  • No substitutions allowed during a time out

Expected standards of behaviour for players, coaches, officials, parents, and spectators at all Throwball Australia events and competitions.
